HUSBANDS: What was the first thing God did when he created man? Hint, He didn't tell us to go out and honor/serve Him by working in the field. Yes, absolutely, we can honor God through our work as we utilize the gifts that He has blessed us with to do His work and His will. But that wasn't God's first priority for us. After creating everything God "saw that it was good." But then, "The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'" (Genesis 2:18) "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24)

Our first calling as Christian men is to be the spiritual leaders for the people that God has blessed us to share this earthly journey with. Our wives. Our children. That is our first calling. In our five-week CHRISTIAN HUSBAND PROGRAM, we proactively and intentionally focus on helping men understand God's calling/desires for what Christian husbands should do/be/look like, and how they can continue to grow towards that calling. Certainly the conversation varies for each individual client, but the basic outline is as follows:

Session One: Where are you at and where do you want to be as a Christian husband?

Session Two: What does the Bible say about guidelines/expectations for Christian husbands?

Session Three: Goal setting (immediate, medium-range, long-range)

Session Four: Vision & Mission statements and how they can successfully be utilized in your marriage

Session Five: Strategies, techniques and perspective focused resources to help you achieve your goals

All sessions are 60-minutes, and can be conducted in-person, over the phone or via online video conferencing

What you will walk away with:

*A much deeper understanding of where you are at, where you are going, and how you are going to get there

FATHERS: Our role as fathers is so incredibly important. The importance is not only found within the need to provide, protect and educate our children as part of the immediate day-to-day responsibility of raising a child from baby to adult (and we know that being a father doesn't end once our children reach adulthood), but also in preparing our children to achieve the future happiness/success that they envision -- not to mention all of the lives that our children will then go on to impact in their own lives. And it all starts with the foundation that parents provide. In this case, we look at the father's role in the equation.

What should Christian fathers do...

"Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframe of your houses and on your gates." (Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

Why should we do it...

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

What is our hope for our children's future...

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." (3 John 4)

Being a good father, and becoming a good Dad, takes a lot of effort on our part. But it is worth it! Along with striving to live up to the call to be the husband/man that God wants us to be, being blessed with the incredible responsibility of caring for and raising a child is our top calling. It isn't something that we should do in whatever free time we can squeeze out after devoting ourselves to our work, hobbies or other endeavors. That doesn't mean we need to spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with our children. But, to be intentional about when/how we spend time with them, the consistent messages and lessons that we are communicating and demonstrating through our actions, the quality time that we spend with them -- these should be areas of focus that we can devote our attention to so that we are proactively mindful of ways that we can maximize our impact in their lives while still being able to excel in other areas of life as well. God did bless us with enough time and energy to be great husbands, fathers and also professionals. We don't have to choose one or the other.

Certainly the conversation varies for each individual client, but the basic outline is as follows:

Session One: Where are you at and where do you want to be as a Christian father?

Session Two: What does the Bible say about guidelines/expectations for Christian fathers?

Session Three: Goal setting (immediate, medium-range, long-range)

Session Four: Vision & Mission statements and how they can successfully be utilized in your parenting

Session Five: Strategies, techniques and perspective focused resources to help you achieve your goals

All sessions are 60-minutes, and can be conducted in-person, over the phone or via online video conferencing

PROFESSIONALS: What does it look like to honor, and serve, God through our professions? Well, that is an important question, particularly in a society that places so much emphasis and perceived status based on professional standing. First off, it is important to note that God does not care what our "title" might be. He only cares that we utilize the gifts that He has blessed us with to honor, serve and glorify Him. Certainly there are many other Biblical principles that can be referenced in regards to professional callings, areas to devote time/attention, and proper mindsets/approaches. But, in and of itself, God does not care if we are an "important" CEO of a company, or in a minimum wage earning "bottom of the ladder" type of position. Below are a couple of Bible verses to help prepare our thoughts/perspective in assessing our professional calling/purpose:

We can approach any profession (no matter if it is deemed "important" or not by the world) in this manner...

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men...It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23 & 24)

We know that our true identity is locked and sealed as redeemed children of God through Christ Jesus...

"The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heir -- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in the sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." (Romans 8:16-17)

Which means that our true value, our true identity, belongs to something/someone much bigger (and of true/eternal value) than whatever our professional title may be. When someone asks, "what do you do?", how do you respond? Do you rattle off your professional title and start explaining what your day-to-day tasks are? If so, why?!! Our professional titles/duties can certainly be important, valuable and Godly -- but they do not define who we are or properly answer the question of what we do! I'll leave it at that for now, but keep that in mind the next time someone asks you what you do. You are so much more than a title and list of professional duties.

"Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.' As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." (James 4:13-17)

With all of that being said, this five-session program is designed to help clients excel in their professions, while also keeping things in proper (Biblical) perspective. Work for God's purpose and glory, not your own. Find peace, enjoyment and fulfillment in your profession whether you are at the top, bottom or middle of the workplace "ladder". If you have aspirations to advance in your career, this program will help you come up with a sound strategy and follow through to reach those goals. Control what you can control -- then let go and let God lead. Trust in His plans, they are good!

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Certainly the conversation varies for each individual client, but the basic outline is as follows:

Session One: Where are you at and where do you want to be as a professional, and in your career in general?

Session Two: What does the Bible say about guidelines/expectations/perspectives for Christian professionals?

Session Three: Goal setting (immediate, medium-range, long-range), Vision & Mission statements

Session Four: Resume/application tips, interview/speaking concepts & strategies, personal branding

Session Five: Strategies, techniques and perspective focused resources to help you achieve your goals

LEADERSHIP: The impact (both positive and negative) that leaders have on/in their businesses/organizations, as well as on the actual people that make up those groups, is game changing. In a highly competitive society, leadership makes the difference when there is little else that differentiates one business/organization from another. We know that, and we acknowledge that leadership is crucial. But far too often we fail to identify/nurture/grow the next batch of emerging leaders. It's just not something that many organizations do well, in large part because they don't know how.

I do not profess to have all of the answers. But what I do have is my own personal experience, as someone who has been fortunate to have been put in leadership positions starting at an early age. And while I was identified as someone with strong leadership qualities, I have not always excelled as a leader. It took me a long time to grow into my abilities, and that is something that I continue to grow into every day. Through my own leadership experiences (both good and bad), as well as meticulous study of what makes someone either a successful or unsuccessful leader, I have learned how to sharpen my leadership skills. That background combined with my training and experience as a life coach, where I have helped hundreds of clients successfully identify, develop, work towards and achieve their goals, has helped me learn a great deal about leadership. Trust me, I would not think of offering something as audacious as a leadership program if I were not completely confident in my understanding of the topic.

With that said, my biggest personal growth, and overall understanding of leadership in general, came when I finally understood that being a good leader was not about me! We certainly are an important part of the process, in that we ultimately have the choice as to whether we will follow God's call to utilize the leadership qualities/gifts that He has blessed us with, but in and of ourselves we do not hold the key to being a great leader. God does. It was only when I looked to Scripture that I found the secret to leadership.

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48)

"...whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28)

"he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet" (John 13:5)

"Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'" (Luke 23:34)

Servant Leadership -- it is a popular concept and buzz word, but few people who talk the talk know how, or are strong enough, to actually walk the walk. Jesus was/is, and He established the model for what servant leadership all entails; and this also includes realizing that as a leader you could conceivably do everything possible within your control perfectly, but ultimately other people have their own free will to choose their actions -- which is something that no leader can control. For example, we have been blessed with everything that we need from our heavenly Father, including eternal life through His Son and our Savior Christ Jesus, but we still also have our own free will to do what we want with all of those blessings. It is our job to be good stewards of the abilities, and other "good things", that God has chosen to bless us with. But if we decide not to use those blessings fruitfully, ultimately that is our free will decision.

In a similar fashion, being a successful leader includes being able to recognize that there is a lot that is beyond our control, and then trusting God enough to let go of those things and be at peace with where His will leads the end results. If we are doing everything that we can to lead during the process phase, then what ultimately ends up happening in the results phase does not matter -- as the end results are God's decision. And our earthly accomplishments or failures do not change our standing with God, or our value within His Kingdom. Our self-worth, our value, is 100% secured as redeemed children of God through our belief/faith in His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ. That is God's grace.

Along that same line of thought, leadership is also about empowering those we lead. Being able to accurately assess the strengths and areas of potential growth in others, and help put them in a position to succeed. Put them in a position to stretch/grow, but not overly expose them to too much too soon. We never want to set someone up to fail, but knowing how to help people learn through challenges is an important part of helping them grow into their own "best self", and helping them grow within their own leadership capacity. It is said that a good leader will pour into the lives of those around them, so if the leader is away the organization will not miss a beat. As I said earlier, being a leader isn't about creating a system where you must be the end-all-be-all, where everything relies on you; but rather, where you have poured into others to such a degree that the organization, and individuals that make it up, can continue to flourish even when the leader isn't there. That's one sign of a successful leader.

But back up for a minute, and be careful here. Notice that I didn't say that we just sit back and let God's will take charge. I said that, "if we are doing everything that we can to lead...". "Doing everything that we can", encompasses a wide range of activities that we must commit to in order to fulfill our role as the leader. And, as Christian leaders, this includes prayer for the people and the circumstances that we are leading. In fact, it not only includes prayer -- our leadership should begin and end with prayer (and include it throughout every step of the journey).

And please don't misinterpret the point that I am making. Absolutely, results do matter! Part of being a successful leader includes being able to create a sound vision, develop stretching but still attainable goals that will lead towards the desired outcome, and then motivating, inspiring, challenging, empowering, supporting, and backing up those we are leading throughout the journey. Along with leading towards the vision/purpose, leaders are also always ready & able to change course on a moments notice, by being prepared for that "curveball" to come, having sound proactive planning in place, thinking clearly & quickly in times of high pressure, and knowing how and when to appropriately adapt to the current conditions.

As a coach, I greatly value utilizing tools such as SMART goals to help in successfully executing a given objective, and leading during the entire process, beginning with an initial concept and seeing it through all the way to completion. And the results do matter, certainly. That is why drive, that inner fire in our bellies, is so crucial for leaders, and that drive ties in to what was previously stated about "doing everything that we can to lead". But, it is still also important to keep things in their proper perspective, and to understand and embrace the fact that there are things beyond our control -- even as leaders. When we can balance our competitive/endless drive for success with the knowledge, understanding and surrender that comes with believing that ultimately God's will will prevail, and that His will is more important and better than our own, that is when we can achieve the sweet balance of leading with a true purpose.

Many various leadership approaches are widely circulated, examined and discussed in our society. Several examples include such concepts as strong leadership, dictatorship, silent leadership, leading by example, collaborative leaders, visionaries, laissez-faire approach, proactive leadership, leaders who empower others, group wisdom approach, etc. There are qualities to many different leadership approaches and, while not explicitly stating such, the Bible presents examples/case studies for many of them. Jesus himself displayed a wide-range of leadership techniques throughout his earthly ministry, but it all culminated with His selfless acts of love through His "servant leadership".

Through this five-session program we will examine and discuss leadership techniques, focusing on the lessons that can be learned through Biblical leaders, and how those lessons can be directly applied to your own situation. Certainly the conversation varies for each individual client, but the basic outline is as follows:

Session One: Where are you at and where do you want to be as a leader in different areas of your life?
