Dream Small

July 25, 2018

Our hyper paced, more-more-more, faster-bigger-never enough society tells us that we need to keep pushing in a endless (and often times useless) pursuit of something “more”. Something more than what we are, more than what we are capable of and, from a faith standpoint, more than what we need. Time and again the Bible teaches us that God’s ways are in contrast to the ways of the world.

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does — comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:15-17)

And how do we pursue “the will of God”? One way...

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

It is with that preface that I share with you the song, and subsequent thoughts, that have resided in my mind recently. The song is, Dream Small, by Josh Wilson. I love the message that is conveyed through the lyrics.

In a world that is constantly pressuring and judging us to do more, to move faster, and to dream big — many of the things that, if we are being completely honest with ourselves, we pursue as we focus on serving ourselves, and for our own glory — this song flips that sentiment and reminds us that it is in those seemingly “simple moments” that we can “change the world”.

As a father, I was particularly drawn to the lyric, “It’s a daddy spending family time that the world said he cannot afford”. I make a very conscious effort to be fully present with my family when I am with them, but I still know that I struggle with keeping the phone in my pocket as I feel the pressure of “the world” trying to tell me that I need to instead keep serving them 24-hours a day.

The song is packed with powerful lyrics. An additional excerpt is as follows:

Dream small

Don't bother like you've gotta do it all

Just let Jesus use you where you are

One day at a time

Live well

Loving God and others as yourself

Find little ways where only you can help

With His great love

A tiny rock can make a giant fall

Dream small

Dear friends, the lyrics to this song are correct! We must not bother like we’ve "gotta do it all" because we serve a God that has that covered for us. We serve a God that has created, prepared, and has led each and every one of us to EXACTLY where He knew we would be on this day and at this precise moment. It may not always feel that way to us, as we get distracted listening to those many external voices that keep pushing us faster, higher, more, more, more…to what end? Instead, let us focus on that “gentle whisper”, to that “still, small voice”, to our Counselor, Spirit of truth, Advocate; the Holy Spirit.

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (John 14:15-17)

When we make an effort to “enter through the narrow gate” by not following the crowd that is trying to endlessly push us to “dream big” (as if embracing that catch phrase in and of itself is some medal that we should be wearing around to prove that we are important) we allow ourselves the freedom of not having to carry our burdens by ourselves. Instead we trust that the Holy Spirit will guide us, and we know that we have a source to help us shoulder our struggles. Jesus told us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

So, if we indeed call the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit our Triune God, let us then strive to make sure that our actions mirror our words. Let us trust our God! Let us embrace His teachings and, as it can be applied to this discussion, let us not be afraid to dream small.

Find little ways where only you can help

With His great love

A tiny rock can make a giant fall

Dream small

Where does God have you in your life? Right now, today? Who can you share a simple moment with? How might that moment change their world?

Returning to a personal standpoint for a moment, I know that I can "dream small" by remembering that (to borrow a quote from the movie "Courageous"), "We cannot fall asleep at the wheel, only to wake up one day and realize that our jobs, or our hobbies, have no eternal value, but the souls of our children do."

I can remember that my children are equally (if not more so) important to whatever else is happening in my world. I can devote my family time attention 100% to them, rather than checking my phone from time to time, while my mind drifts elsewhere.

That is an example of a "little way where only I can help". I am their father, and as such God has uniquely positioned me to have an impact on their lives that only I can have. If I would change jobs someone else would get hired to do that work. And while they likely would not do the job the same way that I would (so in that sense there is an element of our professional work that also serves as an example of a place "where only I can help") the work would get done. But, as a parent, I am the only one who can have that personal/family impact on the lives of my children. God has blessed me to be in that unique position of providing leadership, instruction and love in their lives. And there are countless examples of other "little ways where only I can help" for each of us to reflect on in our lives.

The song continues...

Of course, there's nothing wrong with bigger dreams

Just don't miss the minutes on your way, your bigger things, no

'Cause these simple moments change the world

Keep loving, keep serving

Keep listening, keep learning

Keep praying, keep hoping

Keep seeking, keep searching

Out of these small things and watch them grow bigger

The God who does all things makes oceans from river

A tiny rock can make a giant fall

Yeah, five loaves and two fish's could feed them all

You know the rest by now...DREAM SMALL!

Friends, go ahead and dream big dreams, that is alright, and can certainly be a part of God’s plans for our lives. But, do not lose track of the small things, the quiet moments, or the humble people that are not always “in your face”. Do not forget that it is also significant, profound, and impactful when we dream small.

Keep on dreaming, big and small, in Christ!
